This training resource was developed by Paradigm to share the findings of the research project conducted by co-researchers at Manchester Metropolitan University. Whilst designed for Social Workers to support their Continuous Professional Development (CPD) it is a resource that can be used by many people!

The research aimed to help older people with learning disabilities and their family carers better plan for the future.and encourage Social Workers and others to reflect on how they can better support people with a learning disability and their families as they grow older.

Two thirds of adults with learning disabilities live with their families. Little is known about how family carers plan for their own end of life. Many older carers worry about their children’s futures.

An upsetting change of circumstances, such as the loss of the family home or the onset of chronic health conditions, can lead to behaviours that challenge others in people with learning disabilities.

Such changes can then lead to an increased risk of crisis placements.

Go on, have a look at the resource. You may choose to work through the resource yourself AND/OR use some of the resources e.g. films, reflection sheets etc to encourage discussion and learning in your teams.

One bit NOT TO BE MISSED is Geoff’s film…hint…this is towards the end of the resource!
